December is the time of expectation. We await the coming of the Christ Child and look forward to the return of our Savior. As we approach Christmas, we hear again the stories of Mary and of Joseph. We also hear the story of John the Baptist, Zachariah and Elizabeth. Each of them received a call from God to be an integral part of God’s plan to bring Jesus to the world.
We are also reminded to look forward to our new life with God in heaven. As all these stories unfold we are again reminded to be ready. John the Baptist cries out, “Prepare the way of the Lord.”
Are you ready? Are you preparing the way of the Lord? Each of the characters in these advent stories were called by God to take an active part in God’s plan of Salvation. It is obvious how vital Mary and Joseph and even Elizabeth, Zachariah and John the Baptist are to preparing the way of the Lord. It is easy to see here, what Paul meant when he said, “For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)
But St. Paul’s words apply to all of us. We are all God’s workmanship. We are all created in Christ Jesus to do good works. God has called each of us to be a part of his plan of Salvation. Each of us has an impact on others. The most obvious is the impact we have on our family, but we also impact everyone we meet to some degree.
Have you ever considered that God has called you to be a part of his plan of salvation for those around you? Maybe it is just your prayers on behalf of someone else. As we draw closer to Christmas and New Years are you ready to say yes to Jesus’ call as Mary, Joseph, Zachariah, Elizabeth, and John the Baptist did?
Are we ready as a church to say, “Yes” to Jesus’ call to be a voice calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord?”
