1"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.
2See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you.
3Nations will come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
We are two weeks into January and already the News feeds are loaded with disaster. The threat of war, an Earth quakes in Puerto Rico and Iran, and wild fires burning Australia.
I cannot begin the comprehend the fear from a wild fire let alone ones that were blanketing the entire country.
Tragedy is all around us. Broken families, chronic illness, financial struggles, physical struggles. How do we cope when the world seems to be falling apart around us.
St. Paul encourages us to walk by faith and not by sight. The other of the letter to the Hebrews reminds us that by faith the great heros of the scriptures lived and pressed on clinging to their faith even tough they did not see the fulfillment of God’s promises. They continued to believed and to trust God even when it all seemed hopeless.
13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.
God has kept His promises. He has sent us Jesus. He has died for our sins. He has risen from the grave and is seated at the father’s right hand.
the people living in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.”
And so we too walk by faith and not by sightknowing that God is faithful and continues to keep His promises
