It is a horrible act of evil. Why, do these things keep happening? How can we stop them.
First and foremost we need to be reminded that Jesus is still in control even though it seems more and more like He is absent. St. Paul writes to the Ephesians (1:18-22)
18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
My friends, Jesus still has the whole world in His hands. Obviously violence is magnified by the use of automatic weapons. But we also know the Oklahoma city bombing was executed with motor oil and fertilizer.
The sad truth is if we succeed in controlling the guns and fail to address the moral issue of respect for life people will find other ways to carryout violence. The above passage speaks of Christ as the head of the Body of Christ. When we listen to Christ and follow him we live in harmony with each other as Christ’s body to carry out acts of compassion etc.
But when we deny Christ and everyone does their one thing we become like a body without a head.
The scripture is clear that in the last days people will become more and more godless rejecting Christ and creating their own morality. In the midst of this the people of God are to hold fast to the certain Hope that Christ is still in control, but more than that are called to speak the Word of God to others confident that He will use it to change people’s hearts and minds and mold them to the mind of Christ.
I pray that the Hope of Christ will dwell in you richly making your faith strong and you will speak the word of Christ giving faith to the people around you. That they too may be compelled to follow Jesus.
