I find the story of the Wise Men intriguing. Their lives seem so different from ours. I find it interesting that the wise men followed the star. Scientist today would study the Star they would not follow it. Where did they get the idea that this star was a sign from God? Why pay homage to a new born foreign king. Did they have so much free time they could go follow this star?
The only explanation in my mind is that these men must have been convinced that God was working and speaking. They were so eager to find out what God was doing, they dropped everything, gathered their assets and set out to bring the child their gifts. They must have believed he was more than Israel’s King. The only way they could know that is if God told them. God came to these pagan sages and said, “I want to show you something;” they are convinced it is God and they follow. When they arrive they see Jesus. The Holy Spirit draws them to the Christ Child.
Finally what faith they demonstrate. They drop everything, give extravagantly, and believe that this child fixes everything. They don’t know any of the facts. They know no details about Jesus’ life, death or resurrection. They simply believe that He is the answer, not just for Israel, but everyone.
May God the Holy Spirit fill us with such faith and action.
